About Doxiespine
Doxiespine is an independent publication about one thing: the dachshund spine, and what happens to a household when it fails.
Why this site exists
The best-known resources on canine intervertebral disc disease are run by volunteers and have been online for more than twenty years. They are genuinely useful, and we send readers to them. What they are not is easy to read on a phone at midnight when your dog cannot stand up.
IVDD is also the single most expensive common condition in the breed. Owners are routinely asked to decide on a $6,000 to $10,000 surgery within 48 hours of a first symptom, usually with no preparation and no idea what the range of normal pricing looks like. Most of what is written online avoids numbers. We publish them.
Who writes it
Guides on this site are researched and written by our editorial team. Each guide lists the veterinary sources behind its clinical claims, and every page carries the date it was last reviewed. Where an article has been reviewed by a practicing veterinarian, the reviewer is named in the byline; where it has not, no reviewer is claimed.
We think that distinction matters more than a badge. If you see no reviewer name on a page, assume the article was checked against published literature by an editor and nothing more. You can read exactly how that works in how we research.
How we stay independent
The site is funded by advertising and by affiliate commissions on products we link to, such as ramps and support harnesses. Commission never decides whether a product appears, and we do not accept payment for a recommendation, a review, or a placement in a guide. When a product is genuinely mediocre we say so, and when the honest answer is “you do not need to buy anything”, we say that instead.
We do not sell veterinary services, and we do not take referral fees from clinics or surgeons.
What we cover, and what we leave alone
Five sections, in the order that matches how the problem usually unfolds: spine health, costs and insurance, gear and home setup, daily life with a compromised spine, and original data from owner surveys.
We do not cover breeding, conformation, or show handling. We do not publish dosage tables, home remedies for paralysis, or anything that encourages an owner to delay an examination.
Corrections
Health content goes stale, and we get things wrong. Every correction is logged publicly with the date and what changed, in the corrections log. If you spot an error, tell us and we will fix or explain it.
